Fastned CEO Michiel Langezaal elected new president of European EV charging industry association ChargeUp Europe
Michiel Langezaal, co-founder and CEO of European fast-charging company Fastned, has been elected the new president of ChargeUp Europe: the European charging industry association. Langezaal was elected during the organization’s annual general meeting on 25 February 2025 in Brussels. The association works to accelerate the switch to zero-emission mobility and ensure that EV drivers can enjoy a seamless charging experience, with access to a high-quality and readily-available charging infrastructure across Europe. As president, Langezaal will advocate for growth in Europe's already world-leading charging sector, increased competitiveness of Europe, and the creation of green jobs.
The EV industry finds itself in a crucial phase, with some car makers trying to water down ambitions, jeopardizing the long-term competitiveness of the EU car industry and the build-up of a successful charging sector.
The road ahead is clear: batteries are getting cheaper and by 2030 EVs will be cheaper than fossil cars. It is the roadmap towards that moment that is crucial for the sector to continue to invest and build scale. Only stable and progressive policies allow both car makers and the charging industry to plan ahead and create a viable business and together deliver on the climate ambitions as well as green jobs for the future and green growth.
Roadmap towards electrification
It will be vital in the short term to engage in conversations with the EU on the CO₂ CAFE standards and find solutions to support car makers and the charging sector. To ensure a successful transition, it is essential that all stakeholders are supported on the road towards electrification, including those experiencing challenges along the way.
I am honored to be elected by our sector, with companies ranging from CPOs, utilities, hardware manufacturers, to oil majors transitioning to a low carbon economy, as well as mobility service providers. As president, I will represent them and lead the way into the next phase of growth.
The charging industry is a key stakeholder in decarbonizing European transport. The success of Europe's automotive sector is intrinsically tied to the development of a robust and future-proof charging infrastructure. As such, our sector plays a crucial role in ensuring the long-term competitiveness of Europe.
My ambition is for ChargeUp Europe to be more engaged than ever, actively participating in discussions in Brussels and other European capitals to drive policies that support a thriving and competitive e-mobility ecosystem. I look forward to working with all parties as we move towards this great shared ambition.
