Fastned accelerates UK expansion with new ultra-rapid charging hubs in the North East

Strategic investment in the North East, including Newcastle Airport and Sunderland marks the next step in Fastned’s nationwide growth plan

Fastned has marked a major milestone in its UK expansion, by opening two new, ultra-rapid charging stations, one next to Newcastle  Airport (Callerton Parkway Metro station) and the other on North Moor Road, Sunderland.

The Fastned hub near Callerton Parkway Metro station opened on 16th December 2025. Just one Metro stop from Newcastle Airport, it offers 12 drive-through bays under a full canopy, making it easy for drivers to pull in, charge, and get back on the road

The new North Moor Road, Sunderland hub opened on 22nd December 2025, featuring an initial six charging bays and Fastned's iconic yellow “wings”, creating a bright, welcoming spot for EV drivers. The hub also includes brand-new Costa Coffee and Greggs outlets, making it easy for drivers to grab a drink or snack while their car charges.

With the addition of these two hubs, Fastned now operates 13 sites across the North East, offering fast, reliable charging to more drivers than ever. The network has already supported more than 273,000 charging sessions since Fastned opened the UK’s first ultra-rapid hub at West Wear Street, Sunderland in 2019. This reinforces Fastned’s role in accelerating the region’s electric vehicle adoption.

We are thrilled to welcome Fastned’s ultra-rapid charging hub to the North East. As more drivers look to transition to electric vehicles, it is crucial that we have the infrastructure to support and encourage this. This eye-catching and striking charging hub, located conveniently on a Metro line and near the airport, will allow more people to pull in, charge, and get back on the road. We are leading the way in installing new charge points across the region, and welcome this latest addition as the North East becomes the home of the green energy revolution.

‘Driving Home for Christmas,’ as the song goes, is a journey many of us make during the festive season.  Just in time for this classic journey, our two new ultra-rapid charging hubs are making it even simpler for people across the North East to access fast, reliable EV charging.

Tom Hurst, UK and Ireland Country Director at Fastned

Our first airport location at Newcastle Airport is an exciting milestone. As people make the classic ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ journey this festive season, our new ultra-rapid charging hub forms part of our growing network across the North East, supporting hundreds of thousands of charging sessions and helping people travel sustainably across the region. So whether you’re heading to the airport, visiting family and friends, exploring seasonal events such as local markets, or simply going about your day, there are now faster, greener charging options available.

The Newcastle and Sunderland hubs are designed to make EV driving easier for thousands of local residents, commuters, and visitors, providing reliable, renewable power exactly where it is needed.

The new hub is our latest investment to make charging electric vehicles faster and more reliable for everyone. Just a short drive from the terminal, it’s perfectly placed for passengers travelling to and from the Airport, for those dropping off or picking up friends and family and for members of the local community.

The opening of the hub marks another major milestone on our journey to become a Net Zero Carbon Airport by 2035 and reflects the fantastic progress being made across our business to create a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Both hubs deliver ultra-rapid charging, allowing drivers to top up quickly while supporting the region’s transition to cleaner, electric travel.  They are powered by 100% renewable energy.

M&M Contractors have worked closely with Fastned to deliver the new charging hub in Newcastle.

It’s been a pleasure working closely with Fastned to bring the new charging hub at Newcastle Airport to fruition. Bringing reliable, ultra-rapid charging to this key transport location will make a real difference for both local communities and visitors alike, supporting the transition to cleaner, more sustainable travel. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Fastned and building out their pipeline into 2026

Fastned ultra-rapid charging hubs are designed to be easy, safe, and comfortable for everyone. Extra-wide bays make parking and manoeuvring user-friendly, including for drivers using wheelchairs or mobility aids, while suspended cable systems take the heavy lifting out of ultra-rapid charging. Bright, open layouts with clear sightlines, high-quality lighting, CCTV coverage. Amenities can even include a toilet, and with friendly, multilingual support available 24/7, every driver can charge with confidence and peace of mind.

Fastned has also been recognised by UK EV drivers in a recent Zap-Map survey, achieving the highest scores for ease of use and payment options. By arriving in the North East, one of the UK’s least served regions for ultra-rapid chargers, Fastned is helping more people make the switch to cleaner, more accessible transport.
