Fastned, UK’s best-rated electric vehicle (EV) charging station operator, opens ninth charging hub in north east England
A brand new ultra-rapid charging hub opens today in Houghton-le-Spring, providing a quick charging boost for up to eight electric vehicles travelling around the North East.
London, UK 26 June 2025 - Today Fastned, the European fast-charging company rated the UK’s best medium sized EV charging network by Zap Map, opens a new electric vehicle charging hub with eight charging bays in Houghton-le-Spring.
The site is located off Newbottle Street, A182 northbound towards Newcastle. This is a prime location for anyone travelling to and from Newcastle, Sunderland or Durham. It is conveniently located next to a new Tesco Superstore with a cafe, for a quick pitstop for EV drivers before heading on their way.
Houghton-le-Spring is Fastned’s ninth charging hub in the north east of England. In 2019 Fastned opened the UK’s first ultra-rapid charging site in the centre of Sunderland and has since expanded its north east network from Whitley Bay to Newcastle, Washington and now Houghton-le-Spring.
Eight charging bays are supplied with 100% renewable energy, offering drivers up to 300 miles of range in 20 minutes. The launch means Fastned now has 35 hubs in the UK.
Fastned’s reliable and easy-to-use ultra-rapid chargers, offering a range of payment methods, mean drivers can charge easily with confidence and get back on the road as quickly as possible.
The new charging hub features Fastned’s illuminated yellow wings, which help EV drivers locate the site easily and show drivers who have not yet made the switch to electric that super-fast charging is available to them. This helps to accelerate the EV transition in the UK as a whole.
North East England is the birthplace of Fastned in the UK, so I’m delighted to be strengthening our network in the region. EV drivers will now have better access to ultra-rapid charging in Houghton le Spring, making their long and short journeys that bit easier.
