Fastned frontiers
Bringing electric freedom to Spain, Italy, Denmark and Austria
Fastned aims to create a fast charging network that gives freedom to electric drivers to travel all across Europe with confidence, powered by green energy and enjoying great charging experiences along the way.
In many countries the Fastned network is widespread and familiar: over 180 charging stations in the Netherlands, over 50 in France, more than 40 in Belgium and Germany, with the UK following closely. But in other countries, the Fastned journey is only beginning.
With the official opening of our stations in Spain, Fastned is now powering drivers in nine countries and counting - with more than 50% of our stations now outside the Netherlands.
Spain, Italy, Denmark and Austria represent countries where Fastned is building from the ground up, working to bring our unique human-centred charging concept to every electric driver across Europe.
Here Fastned’s in-country experts tell us how we create electric freedom at the frontiers of our network.
Fastned arrived in Spain at a key moment for electric mobility in the country. Spain has a huge automotive industry - the second largest in Europe - with millions of Spanish jobs and around 10% of national GDP dependent on the sector. At the same time, EV numbers are rising fast, with over 50,000 new EVs on the road in the first half of 2025.
However, charging infrastructure remains inconsistent. The Spanish government has committed to creating a quality EV charging infrastructure, but faces challenges: a vast land area (12 times the size of the Netherlands), complex permitting procedures, and less experience of EV development.
While EV charging is available throughout Spain, the vast majority of chargers are underpowered (150kW or less) or unreliable. We want to raise this standard for Spanish EV drivers, so our new stations at El Garraf feature always-dependable charges of 400kW each. In future locations we’re also planning to introduce amenities such as toilets and shops as seen in other countries for a more complete customer experience.
Fastned has worked closely with national and regional authorities since our arrival to share our expertise and experience of network development. We know that drivers need to see visible and widespread infrastructure in place to feel comfortable switching to electric, but while station construction often takes only 3-4 months, negotiations and land use changes can slow things down for up to three years. Fastned’s Spain team works with these governments and policymakers to advocate for more efficient processes and a faster infrastructure rollout.
While other charging companies have chosen to slow investment into Spain due to uncertain short-term returns, Fastned instead focuses on our long-term vision of creating reliable, visible, and enjoyable charging experiences in locations where drivers need them most. This aligns with our mission to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
Spain is already making a huge contribution to electric mobility with dozens of EV models manufactured in the country, and the stage is set to accelerate the transition here.
Now that our first stations in Spain have arrived, we hope to open 80 stations by 2030, focusing on key highways and busy roads around major cities such as Madrid - building the foundation for the country’s electric future.
Fastned’s first Italian station opened at Truck Park Brescia Est in February 2025, bringing eight 400kW chargers to the heart of the country’s most EV-dense region. More than ten more locations are in development, initially focused on connecting key routes across the north of the country and making charging as visible and accessible as possible for Italian drivers.
Italy’s roads and automotive heritage are second to none, but the country’s transition to electric mobility has faced hurdles. Government support for EVs has been inconsistent, and finding reliable, well-located charging remains a challenge, especially on highways. However, momentum is growing: over 300,000 fully electric vehicles now travel Italian roads, and demand for quality charging is increasing.
To keep powering the transition, there is a need for consistent government support. Our in-country team advocates for clearer, more stable rules and incentives for EV ownership while working to correct misconceptions about electric driving and showcase the benefits of making the switch to e-mobility.
Fastned aims to connect cities such as Milan, Turin, Verona, Venice and Bologna with popular tourist destinations like Lake Garda and the Dolomites and essential amenities such as Malpensa Airport - making all-electric holiday road trips a reality. Our stations will initially be focused on the north of Italy (where over 50% of Italy’s EVs are registered) before looking to expand throughout the country.
Italy’s position at the southern tip of Europe makes it a vital part of Fastned’s plan to connect Europe from north to south. As France reaches 50 Fastned stations and Spain’s network begins to grow, it’s clear that Italy and other countries on the Mediterranean are ready to embrace the transition and open the south of Europe to all electric drivers.
Italy has great potential to benefit from the electric revolution both socially and economically, and official support for innovation and investment (including from outside the country) is essential to turn this potential into reality. EV market share shot up over 20% to reach over 5% of all car sales in Italy in 2025, and Fastned is helping Italy’s automotive tradition evolve for the future - and giving more drivers the confidence to go electric.
Unlike some of our other new markets, Denmark is a frontrunner in electric mobility, with over 436,000 EVs on the road - over 10% of all registered vehicles in the country, the highest in any of Fastned’s active markets.
Fastned aims to bring our innovation and refined customer experience to Denmark to raise the bar and exceed driver expectations in the next phase of the transition.
Denmark’s centralised network of highways and corridors connects major cities (particularly Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, and Aalborg) and neighbouring countries, making it a vital international route across Europe and a great opportunity for electrification.
Our first three Danish stations opened in 2024, with nine more locations currently in development. Our goal is a nationwide network of around 70 locations by 2030, offering Danish drivers, and those travelling from abroad, the best fast charging on these vital routes.
In Denmark, competition for locations is fierce and the regulatory landscape is unique. Many highway sites are state-owned, and strict design requirements mean we are not always free to install our iconic Solar Tree canopies, as found in Fastned stations in other countries.
This means we’ve had to adapt our station designs, so we haven’t yet been able to introduce our full range of driver-friendly features at these stations. Away from state-owned locations, we pursue commercial partnerships with private landowners where we can bring the full Fastned design concept to life.
Fastned has proposed new locations and business models, such as reimagining undeveloped rest areas (showcased in our flagship Gentbrugge stations in Belgium) while engaging directly with landowners and authorities to advocate for longer concession periods and more flexibility in station design, aiming to show leadership in raising standards for drivers in Denmark.
As the political landscape evolves and a new phase of tendering and development begins, we intend to make Fastned a familiar and trusted name for Danish drivers: further powering the country’s rapid transition to electric mobility.
Austria is quickly emerging as a key player in Europe’s electric future. EVs now make up over 21% of new registrations - above the EU average - and more than 230,000 EVs are already on the road. As with other markets, these drivers require fast and reliable charging, so in 2025 we set up our Austria team and began planning our rollout.
Austrian roads form crucial connections locally and internationally. On a wider scale, Austrian highways are particularly vital transit routes, making reliable highway charging essential for a wide range of drivers and presenting huge opportunities for electrification and decarbonisation.
Fastned will start by opening stations along key highway corridors – vital transit routes for travellers from across Eastern and Western Europe – and by focusing on high-traffic urban locations near cities like Vienna, Graz and Linz, where a large share of the country’s EVs are registered.
The first Austrian tenders for on-highway fast charging locations are already out, with more to follow in the coming years - and Fastned will be competing for all of them, hoping to bring our experience and replicate successes we’ve seen in other tenders, notably the Deutschlandnetz tender in Germany.
As in many countries, EU regulations are encouraging Austrian authorities to scale up charging infrastructure. However - as in Denmark - restrictions mean we are often unable to build our Solar Tree canopies or add amenities such as shops and toilets. Our team is committed to campaigning for higher standards and more driver-friendly facilities, drawing on lessons from other key markets and bringing Austrian drivers the best charging experience available.
Building Europe’s best quality fast charging network
Fastned’s mission is to accelerate the transition to electric mobility - and this means everywhere, not only in our more established markets. Over 1.1 million EVs have been added to EU roads in only the first 8 months of 2025, and we want to bring our fast and reliable charging to every EV driver.
As our network develops towards 1000 stations across Europe by 2030, we will continue to invest in our expert in-country teams to ensure a rapid and efficient rollout of Fastned stations in all our counties of operation - new and established.
