Avoiding emissions with every charge

Every kWh sold at our stations avoids fossil fuel emissions. In 2025, Fastned effectively avoided 165,900 tonnes of CO₂. Total emissions avoided since Fastned was founded now stands at 466,757 tonnes of CO₂e (as of year-end 2025).

Every time a car charges with us they avoid on average 24 kg of CO₂. That’s equivalent to almost eight litres of petrol that you did not burn while driving. Eight! In just one charging session.

Ensuring the sale of renewable energy

We use the EU's Guarantee of Origin (GoO) system to ensure that for every kWh of electricity we sell, one kWh of renewable energy has been produced. We do this on a country-by-country basis, buying, for instance, German GoOs for all kWhs sold in Germany, to stimulate local renewable production. The vast majority of the renewable power that Fastned provides for our customers comes from solar and wind sources, and sometimes, depending on the country’s energy mix, other renewable energy sources.

We have verified our GoO purchases with consulting firm Dutch Carbon Consultants for the following years:

Reducing our carbon footprint

Setting the baseline for reductions

The creation and delivery of the materials we use to build our stations is both an energy and emissions intensive process. In 2022 we embarked on the journey to understand, and ultimately reduce, Fastned’s carbon footprint. Step one was to conduct a life cycle analysis (LCA) on a standard 4.2 station with four chargers covered by two canopies, built in 2022. The LCA taught us that building a standard station using the materials in our 2022 catalogue amounts to approximately 85 tonnes of CO₂. This analysis provides the baseline for the next steps in reducing our stations’ carbon footprint.

Scope 1, 2, and 3 calculations

To understand our carbon footprint, we have calculated our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions for the years 2021-2025 with the support of and verification by external expertise.

We made these calculations in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the world's most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standards.

In 2025, we expanded our Scope 3 emissions sub-categories to capture a broader range of emissions across our value chain. This will help us to make more informed decisions regarding our carbon emissions reduction strategy. For more information on the categories included, please see our 2025 Annual Report.

Going up the ladder

The CO₂ Performance Ladder, or Prestatieladder, is a Dutch sustainability instrument that helps companies and governments reduce CO₂ emissions and costs in their operations, projects and supply chains.

It is based on management-system principles and continuous improvement. This means putting repeatable processes in place to improve both CO₂ performance and the management system.

Fastned will recertify for the CO₂ Performance Ladder certification in late 2026, again using the certification’s new handbook, which SKAO released in early 2025. This means that Fastned will attempt to maintain its Level 2 certification (out of three levels). Achieving Level 2 entails creating and executing a mid-term climate transition plan. An independent third party will again audit Fastned in late 2026 to recertify. We will share project developments and audit results in future reports and communications.

Our Commitment to the Paris Agreement

At Fastned, our mission is driven by a commitment to addressing the climate crisis and realising the objectives set out in the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal. Our work centres on accelerating the transformation to electric mobility by expanding a network of ultra-fast, reliable and renewably powered charging stations across Europe.

We actively engage with policymakers and trade associations at both EU and national levels, including in all countries where we are based, to help shape legislation that supports the goals of the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal. All of our political engagement is guided by these principles and in service of a common vision for a sustainable future.
